Arabic Intensive Programme - 1 year

We will embark on the journey of knowledge with the Prophetic language of Arabic. Our first year Arabic intensive programme will include:

Arabic Grammar / al-Nahw

Arabic grammar is thrilling because it allows one to unlock the structure and secrets of the Arabic language, the relationship between words, and the ways in which subtle diacritical changes make all the difference in decoding and correctly understanding sentences. This is the first step in uncovering hidden gems in the Quran and Sunnah.

Arabic Morphology / al-Sarf

Al-Sarf is primarily concerned with the behaviour of verbs in Arabic, the root letters which form the etymology of all Arabic words, how verbs inflect in relation to either their subject or object, and the templates they follow. You will learn about the internal assembly of a word by way of patterns of vowelisation and the introduction of extra letters, how a verb is conjugated, and the different forms it can take.

Spoken Arabic

Spoken Arabic will help students develop an affinity with the Arabic language and puts the grammar rules into practice on a verbal level to create dialogue between two people. This course will move from basic phrases into more complex and long sentences enabling a student to converse in Arabic to a good minimum standard. Students will become familiar with everyday phrases and modes of expression in different circumstances and try to replicate this in their day-to-day lives.

Arabic Literature / al-Adab

Al-Adab al-Arabi is the study of classical and contemporary Arabic literature. Students will read short stories, articles, and passages from modern and classical Arabic works and poetry. This course is designed to develop an appreciation of the literary beauty of the Quran and Sunnah and nurture a lasting bond with the Arabic language. Students will parse sentences using their knowledge of grammar and an analysis of linguistics in order to grasp more fully the nuances of the Arabic literary tradition.

Tajweed

Tajweed-ul-Qur’an aims to teach the recitation of the Qur’an in the most efficient manner. We at Hafs Alimiyyah have made Tajweed and Qur’an the focal point of the learning experience. No matter what the ability of a person may be, it is important for all to attempt to read the Book of Allah (the Exalted) at their own pace. The teachers work very hard to facilitate the learning of students so that they become people who are not only proficient reciters of the Qur’an but are also disciplined with the Adab of the Qur’an. Many verses have been provided as examples so that students can practice each rule and start reading with a higher level of awareness. The scholars of Islam unanimously agree that it is incumbent on every Muslim to learn and apply the rules of Tajweed. Everyone does not need to become a Hafiz (memoriser) or a Qari (scholar of Qur’an recitation), but one must recite the Qur’an to the best of one’s ability.
